Leeds Castle

“The Loveliest Castle in the World”

Leeds Castle is a romantic castle with medieval themed rooms, 1920s style interiors and original marble bathrooms, large estate – grounds, gardens, moat, river, large formal gardens, woodlands, maze with shell grotto, aviary.

Begin with a journey through nine centuries of heritage: originally the site of a Saxon manor, the Castle has been a Norman stronghold, a royal residence for six medieval Queens, a favourite palace of Henry VIII and a Treasure House of England.

Many of the rooms showcase both medieval and Tudor periods, while the influence of Lady Baillie, who used the finest French architects and designers to create an elegant country residence in the 20thC, brings the state rooms to life. Paintings, antiques and tapestries fill the Castle.

Outside, the Aviary houses over 100 species of birds from around the world, many of them threatened in the wild due to loss of habitat. There is also a thrilling World of Wings free-flying bird display featuring black kites, eagles and even parrots.

Gardens provide continuous colour throughout the year, from spring bulbs in the Wood Garden to herbs and roses in the quintessentially English Culpeper Garden, and late flowering borders in the Mediterranean-style Lady Baillie Garden. The grounds and riverside offer lovely walks.

Test your sense of direction in the spiralling yew maze and return through the underground grotto of shells and mythical beasts. Children can conquer their very own fort in the wooden Knights’ Realm Adventure Playground, based on a scale model of the castle. There’s also a toddlers’ play area and turf maze.
