Slane Castle Estate

The approach to Slane Castle is along a curved driveway offering an iconic view of the Castle and River Boyne. Home to the Conyngham family and world-famous concert venue, Slane Castle Estate extends over 1500 acres in the Boyne Valley, conveniently close to Dublin.

Slane Castle is one of the most architecturally exciting buildings in Ireland. The castle is three storeys over basement, in the Gothic Revival style. The King George IV Ballroom is a highlight, completed in 1821 for the visit of King George IV, this impressive rotunda with a magnificent domed ceiling is one of the finest examples of Neo Gothic works in Ireland. Originally designed by Thomas Hopper as a library, it features perfect acoustics and is where U2 recorded The Unforgettable Fire album. The classical front hall features Greek columns and key patterns on the walls and many marble Greek sculptures, including a sculpture of King George IV of England, donated by the king himself.

The Gandon Room restaurant presents in a contemporary gentleman’s club style, contrasting with the general Castle style. Browne’s Bar features memorabilia from 40 years of high profile rock concerts and could easily double as a local pub.

The interior of the Castle is very flexible in terms of set options and lends itself well to filming. The rooms are large and generously proportioned with exceptional views of the surrounding countryside, River Boyne, lush pastureland and woodlands. Five of the many spacious bedrooms are currently available to paying guests. The dramatic exterior is also ideal as a backdrop with many different options and aspects.

The Castle features several courtyards, the smallest of which adjoins the side of the building. The stable courtyard was designed by Capability Brown in the late 1700s and now houses the Slane Distillery visitor centre.

The Estate is easily accessible from Dublin and is well set up for film crews with direct access from a major road and ample parking facilities. It is set in a combination of woodland and parkland with access to the river on both sides. A number of tracks and paths through the woodland give many options for different looks and feels. Slane Castle Estate is accessed from Slane village which is a very picturesque and historic village. Beautiful views along the river towards the Castle include the weir, millraces and thirteen arch masonry bridge dating back to the 1400s.
