Muncaster Castle

Muncaster Castle has been home to the Pennington family for over 800 years and legend has it that it is one of the most haunted places in England.

The Castle is a treasure chest of art, antiques, history and culture which includes The Great Hall with dramatic rich red and wood panelling dating from the medieval period. The Library has a magnificent 40 foot high galleried room lined with over 6000 books. The Victorian Billiard Room is complete with 18th century marquetry and the Drawing Room has a superb vaulted ceiling and beautiful marble fire place.

Muncaster is bordered by beautiful gardens, set to a backdrop of the spectacular Lakeland Fells. Unusual plants, trees and flowers from all over the world grow in the landscaped areas and the wild woods. From the front of the Castle there is a breathtaking view of the Ghyll, a steeply sided valley filled with a bank of hundred year old rhododendrons. Magnificent views of the Esk Valley are accentuated by the slopes of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.

Within the gardens we have 4 star guest accommodation in the original Coachman’s Quarters, available on a bed & breakfast or self catering basis, sleeping up to 29 people. Guests have exclusive access to a comfortable lounge, large kitchen and dining area. Free wi-fi is available.

Also on site is the World Owl Trust, home to one of the largest collections of owls in the world.

One mile away in historic, picturesque Ravenglass, the only coastal village in The Lake District National, we also have The Pennington Hotel providing 3 star accommodation in 21 luxury bedrooms, many with estuary views. The Hotel offers fine dining in the Estuary Restaurant, and also bar food. Free wi-fi access.
