A stunning 17th century stately home in the heart of the west Norfolk countryside – Raynham Hall is surrounded by acres of parkland, farmland and forest within a few miles away from the awe inspiring North Norfolk coastline, fishing villages and the Royal Family’s Sandringham estate.
The building of Raynham Hall was started by Horatio Townshend in 1622 and constructed in an elegant single block form. The ancestral home of the Townshend family, Raynham has retained its Palladian style internal décor including the elaborately carved architectural chimneypieces, the architectural doorcases, painted staircase and ceilings by the celebrated 18th century designer William Kent.
The current Lord and Lady Townshend are restoring their 400-year-old home to its original glory including 17th/18th century portraits and beautiful period furnishings and features.
The privately owned house lies on raised land above an earlier incarnation of the Townshend residence, which now forms the picturesque stable-yard adjacent to the lake. Surrounded by extensive parkland and 5,000 acres of farmland, Raynham is approached by a tree lined drive and boasts a variety of delightful rooms which lend themselves to film and television period dramas.
A fine entrance leads into the black and white marble tiled Marble Hall which is suitable for balls and musical performances thanks to its wonderful acoustics. The suite of rooms include the fabulous State Dining Room, the breath taking double height Belasarius Room, the King’s Room bedroom (named after the royal visit of Charles II) as well as the bespoke William Kent library containing the private collections of the 2nd Viscount and the 1st Marquess, consisting of historic leather and vellum bound books dating back to the C16th.
Lord and Lady Townshend are delightful hosts with experience of accommodating location filming. Guests are able to stay in modernised attic bedrooms/bathrooms and nearby accommodation is available.
